The Discarded Ace

THEDORAMA.COM Review

"The Discarded Ace" deals a strong hand. NetShort has delivered a tightly paced drama that keeps you guessing. The premise is classic revenge – a wronged man returning to settle scores – but it's executed with a stylish flair that sets it apart.

Leo, our titular ace, is compelling. Abandoned as a child and forged into a card shark by a mysterious mentor, he exudes a quiet intensity. You believe in his skill, and you root for him despite his sometimes ruthless methods. The actor playing Leo does a fantastic job of portraying the character's inner turmoil; the pain of abandonment is always simmering beneath the surface, even as he coolly outmaneuvers his opponents.

The gambling scenes are genuinely thrilling, not just because of the stakes involved, but because the show takes the time to explain the strategies at play. Even if you're not a card player yourself, you'll be caught up in the tension of each hand, thanks to smart direction and editing. The supporting cast is equally strong, especially the actors playing Leo’s estranged family. Each member is flawed and complex, adding layers to the central conflict. You may find yourself sympathizing with them, even as you want Leo to take them down.

The cinematography is slick and modern, lending a cinematic feel to the series. The soundtrack is equally effective, heightening the drama without being intrusive. While the plot treads familiar ground, "The Discarded Ace" elevates the material with strong performances, sharp writing, and a visual style that's both elegant and engaging.

However, the series isn't without its flaws. The pacing occasionally falters, especially in the middle episodes, and some of the plot twists feel a little too convenient. Also, NetShort’s budget limitations are occasionally apparent in some of the special effects.

Despite these minor shortcomings, "The Discarded Ace" is a worthwhile watch, especially for those who enjoy dramas with a healthy dose of suspense and intrigue. Put your money on this one; you likely won't be disappointed.
